Short Adventures for the Weekend Warrior – can you squeeze in a trip in the next few months?
This blog is all about weekend adventures, which are perfect multi-day trips for a quick burst of adventure. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.
This weekend, I am off on an adventure with Mum in a caravan on the South Coast – for walks, sea swimming and BBQs on the beach! When we go out for the day, we like to get off the beaten track, so we always take a flask of tea, a picnic, and Mum brings her homemade fruit cake.
Your Mission: Pick a date and get planning.

Road Trip Revival – I have always loved a road trip in my Camper Van, Daisy.
There’s something simple and exciting about hitting the road where you control the pace. You will need a playlist, a podcast, snacks, your favourite person, and look forward to the unknown ahead. A weekend road trip is the best way to escape routine without the hassle of airports or a rigid schedule.
The key to this trip is to be curious and stop along the way to explore—look out for sightseeing spots, honesty boxes, and old-fashioned pubs!
Scenic Routes to try
- The Cotswolds Charm Trail – wind through picture-perfect English villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. Stop for afternoon tea, antique hunting, and countryside strolls.
- The Scottish Highlands Loop begins in Inverness and journeys along the NC500 route. Even a short leg offers lochs, castles, and dramatic scenery.
- South Coast Beauty Drive – start in Brighton and explore coastal gems like Seven Sisters Cliffs, Rye, and Hastings. Lots of sea air and fresh seafood!
Top road trip revival tip – use Airbnb Experiences to add local flair, like a whisky tasting or a guided photography session en route. These can be pricey, so look for the activity and search for direct links.
Weekend Hiking Retreats: Nature’s Reset Button
I have always loved a big breakfast and an early start to my hiking day, and then stepping into a world away from screens and stress. You could choose from coastal cliffs, forest trails, or mountain peaks.
Top Hiking Getaways:
- Peak District -just a couple of hours from Manchester or Sheffield, this National Park is dotted with charming inns, rolling hills, and trails for all abilities. Mam Tor is a must-climb for panoramic views.
- Snowdonia National Park – if you’ve got a bit more energy, tackle Mount Snowdon—Wales’ highest peak. Combine it with a cosy Airbnb and a pub dinner, and you’ve got a fulfilling 2-day travel idea.
- The Lake District is a paradise for walkers and water lovers alike. Take gentle lakeside strolls or hike up Catbells or Helvellyn for a bit more challenge.
Top hiking weekend tip – pack your things the night before, leave super early Friday/Saturday, and book a Sunday roast ahead of time in the lakes, to round off your weekend.
Don’t underestimate how fit you need to be for the bigger climbs, and always be prepared for ALL types of weather.
When I climbed Ben Nevis with my boys, I saw a guy in flip-flops and a denim jacket! I did warn him to turn around (it was rainy and foggy at the top).
City Breaks: Culture, Cuisine, and Discovery!
Sometimes, all you need is the buzz of a different city—the sights, smells, and surprises that come with exploring somewhere new.
Brilliant City Break Ideas:
- Edinburgh – with its cobbled streets, castle views, and quirky cafés, it’s a feast for the senses. Lots of boutique hotels offer 2-night deals.
- Bristol – a creative hub with an indie spirit. Explore Harbourside, take a Banksy walking tour, and enjoy vibrant food markets.
- Lisbon, Portugal – a city by the sea! Easy access from most major airports, rooftop cafes, and take the famous Tram 28 to ride through the old town streets and dine in the food market.
- Book local tours via GetYourGuide for insider access to street food, street art, and secret city gems.
Top city travel tips – I always take a bus or water boat trip to get my lay of the city and spot little gems I would like to visit.
Wellness Retreats: Unplug to Recharge
Nothing beats a wellness retreat if your soul is crying out for rest. From yoga to digital detoxing, a weekend wellness retreat can leave you more restored than a week in the sun!
Wellness Retreat Highlights:
- Ockenden Manor, Sussex. Set in peaceful countryside, this boutique retreat blends yoga, meditation, and healthy meals with nature walks and deep rest.
- The Zest Life, Anglesey. Combining coastal hikes, sea swims, and soulful sessions, this women-focused retreat is ideal for a weekend adventure trip with purpose.
- Gaia Spa, Devon. Luxury meets serenity in this award-winning spa hotel. Book a 2-night package and indulge in thermal experiences, massages, and holistic therapies.
Top retreat getaway tip: Many retreats offer Friday evening to Sunday evening options. If you can be flexible on dates, look for out-of-season or midweek deals.
Solo Travel for weekend warriors
We often pour so much into others that we forget to refill our own cup. Solo quick getaways can be a powerful way to rediscover your rhythm, embrace independence, and build confidence.
I remember the first trip I went on without the family, and it was a total revelation after 20 years of family trips. I just sat on the aeroplane really still and read for the whole flight! These trips may take some practice until you feel comfortable, but they are SO worth it.
Great Solo-Friendly Getaways:
- Bath is Safe, stylish, and steeped in history. Soak in the thermal waters, browse bookstores, and visit the Royal Crescent. (Did you know the first stamp to be mailed was sent from Bath? It was called the Penny Black!)
- Whitstable – This quaint seaside town is great for mooching along the beach, enjoying fresh oysters, or a Thames Barge trip.
- Forest of Dean – Stay in a cabin or treehouse and go forest bathing
Top solo travel tip: Take a book or two that you have been meaning to read. Try camping for one night to dip your toe into the solo travel thing – it can be nearby and cheap! Canopy and Stars – having amazing and unique places to stay all over the UK
