From Comfort Zone to Adventure Mode: my guide to embracing a more Adventurous life.

Expanding your comfort zone is definitely a topic that I love. I have been working on stretching mine for the last 30 years. I still have moments when I feel panic rising—the most recent time was on an expedition in Finland in February, when we were standing on the start line with 100km of snow ahead of us!! This blog was inspired by one of my swims in Jersey last weekend. I knew it would be a tricky swim before I went in. You could see the swell of the water and the rocks nearby. I knew I had to give it a go if I wanted to get better.

Sea swimming is a very different beast from pool swimming, and the only way to improve is to keep practising in the sea, pushing yourself a little at every swim. Over the four days, I could feel an improvement, and I was really chuffed after the last swim of the weekend. My wetsuit hat helped, as it kept me warmer, and I somehow felt less vulnerable!

So, if you’ve ever felt stuck in a routine, longed for excitement but nervous about leaping into the unknown, this guide is for you. Transitioning from a comfort zone to an adventure mindset is a process, not a single act. It requires self-awareness, courage, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.

The blog will cover why we get trapped in our comfort zones, how to break free, and the practical steps to shift into adventure mode!

What Stops Us from Leaving our Comfort Zone?

The comfort zone is a state of mind where we feel safe, in control, and at ease. It’s built around everyday habits and predictable outcomes. Although we’re comfortable with the status quo, it’s also our prison guard, preventing us from growth and new experiences. The most common reasons for staying safe are:

  • Fear of Failure: and of the unknown brings the possibility of failure, and we are conditioned to experience failure as negative.
  • Fear of Judgment: family, friends and colleagues often have expectations that keep us from taking risks.
  • Routines and Habits: we are accustomed to our daily patterns, and changes can feel disruptive.
  • Lack of Confidence: self-doubt often prevents us from believing in ourselves.

Staying in a comfort zone for too long leads to stagnation, closing opportunities to grow, learn and flourish.

The key to unlocking adventure is to take it gradually.  Small steps, one challenge at a time.

Why Adventure Mode Matters – the science bit!

Personal growth happens when we challenge ourselves to experience beyond what we find easy and comfortable. In Psychology, this is known as the ‘stretch zone’—the space between comfort and sheer panic. When we step into this zone, we activate the switch in our heads that allows us to learn, adapt, and thrive.

Not convinced? Take a look at some of the benefits of leaving your safe space and embracing adventure mode!

Benefits of Embracing Adventure Mode will include:

  • Increased Confidence: overcoming challenges builds resilience.
  • Greater Creativity: new experiences expand our thinking.
  • More Opportunities: taking risks opens doors to exciting possibilities.
  • Enhanced Happiness: the thrill of adventure releases dopamine, the feel-good chemical

Practical Steps to Shift from Comfort to Adventure Mode

Step 1: It’s a Mindset Thing!

Your mindset determines how you perceive risk and adventure.   You’ll need to reframe your perspective to change your comfort mindset to adventure mode.

  • Think of fear as excitement  – the physiological response to fear (increased heart rate, adrenaline) is similar to excitement. When you feel nervous, tell yourself, “I’m excited!” instead of ‘I’m scared’
  • Failure can be a valuable learning tool – view things that don’t go to plan as a chance to learn and grow. Even mistakes can be lessons that help us grow.
  • Believe in yourself! Believe that your abilities and capabilities can be developed with effort and experience.

Step 2: Start Small

Don’t get overwhelmed – start small . A giant leap will have you discombulated (my favourite word) very quickly, so start with one foot in front of the other until you get outside your comfort zone.

  • Try something new weekly: it could be as simple as a new coffee shop, a different workout, or a new route to work.
  • Speak to a stranger: this is never easy! But you could start by saying good morning to someone you pass on the street.
  • Learn a new skill: enrol in a class or take up that hobby you’ve always promised yourself.  It needn’t be expensive – YouTube has a huge library of instructional videos for every imaginable skill and hobby.

Each small step builds momentum, and your confidence will grow, ready for bigger adventures.

Step 3: Reframe Risk

Risk often has a negative interpretation, but if you do your research, taking calculated risks could lead to the most exciting and rewarding experiences.

  • Learn how to tell if you’re being reckless or taking a strategic risk – reckless risks are taken without thought, while strategic risks involve planning.
  • Ask ‘What’s the Worst That Could Happen?  Often, the worst-case scenario isn’t half as bad as we imagine.
  • Prepare for the unknown: do your research, make a plan and take precautions, but don’t let preparation become an excuse for inaction!

Step 4: Change Your Environment

Our surroundings, work colleagues, and home life shape our habits and mindset.  Sometimes, stepping into adventure mode will require changing the environment.  It’s very easy to get stuck on a sofa binge-watching a box set!  Yes, that means step away from Sirens, MobLand and The White Lotus!!!

  • Travel to a new place – a weekend getaway or a local day trip can shift your perspective.
  • Surround yourself with adventurous people. Being around risk-takers and explorers will encourage you to follow suit. Their appetite for adventure will rub off!
  • Declutter your routine, think about the activities that keep you stuck in repetitive or boring cycles.  Focus on the freedom that will come from ditching activities that are just habits and no longer serve you.
  • My mum (80 yrs old) wanted to ride a bike somewhere new, but was worried about not having enough energy to get home. So, we made a plan, borrowed an electric bike, found a short flat loop, and had a picnic at the end. She absolutely loved it—riding a bike feels like being a kid again!

Step 5: Set Adventure Goals

  • Create an ‘Adventure Bucket List’. Write down experiences you want to have, whether it’s an afternoon in the park each week, skydiving or taking up a new hobby.
  • Set a monthly Adventure Challenge. Challenge yourself to do one bold thing each month.  Tell a friend so they can keep you accountable.
  • Track your progress. Keep a journal of your adventures and reflect on how each experience changes you.
  • This month, my adventure challenge is to book a swimming lesson with a coach so they can help me improve my swimming.

Step 6: Develop Resilience – builds your comfort zone with every challenge.

When you step into adventure mode,  resilience will help you push through the challenges that come your way.

  • Get used to taking discomfort in your stride  – take cold showers, wake up early, or go without social media for a day!
  • Use the ‘5-Second Rule’ – when hesitation strikes, count down from five and take immediate action.
  • Reframe any setbacks – when things don’t go as planned, think about what you learned from the experience.  Ask yourself what you can do differently instead of dwelling on any disappointment.

Resources that will show you examples of women from around the world challenging their comfort zone.

  • Book: Wild by Cheryl Strayed: A memoir chronicling Cheryl’s 1,100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail following personal tragedy.
  • Film: Tracks (2013) The story of Robyn Davidson’s 1,700-mile solo trek across the Australian desert with camels and a dog. This is one of my favourite films, the story was covered by National Geographic in 1978 – it made the front cover!
