Once a swimmer, always a swimmer!

Life can be cruel, after surviving Guillain Barre Syndrome in 2014 and gaining my strength back I wasn’t expecting to be struck down with another autoimmune disease. My mental health plummeted, until I took the plunge to accept what is, and make the most of it. Together with my 9 year old son we’ve joined North East Disability Swim Team. I used to swim competitively as a child and grew up to be a lifeguard, I’m so happy I can still do what I love.

Why is the outdoors important to you?

I have to use walking aids, I’m so tired all the time, so I never thought I would ever swim again. But getting back into the water was the best thing I’ve done, my mental health has improved significantly.

Why do you want to be involved?

I’d love to show others that there’s hope, and that the dreams you’ve had can still be done, just with a bit of adaption.
