Time In and On the Water, at Home and Abroad!

I am lucky enough to live near the sea in Eastbourne, and I love my dips in the sea and paddleboarding adventures with friends. For my 60th birthday last year, my family clubbed together so that I could buy a paddleboard that I use for local adventures. Earlier this year, I was thrilled to be able to travel to South Africa for a retreat with some amazing women. We stayed near the sea, close to where the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific Ocean (the water wasn’t especially warm), near a colony of South African penguins. Of course, we couldn’t go into their territory, but the penguins were blissfully unaware of the boundaries, and I had a penguin swim around my ankles one evening. I also had the opportunity to paddleboard along a canal in Cape Town where I watched a heron fishing close to me – a completely different perspective on the city.

Why is the outdoors important to you?

I’m working to rebuild my confidence, both in myself and in my body-confidence, after many years of feeling less-than: challenging myself – even to wearing a swimming costume on the beach – has been key to this. I had divorced after many years in a controlling and DV relationship, then experienced the ‘empty-nest’ and I have also been a carer for my mother after the death of my father. Being in the water is bracing, life-affirming and wonderful – the peace and serenity I have found has been healing, especially when surrounded by wildlife – a way to experience our wonderful countryside. Making friends, often linked to my new passions, has also helped me – there is nothing more life-affirming than a group of women encouraging each other to achieve their goals, and I have benefitted so much from their support. My role has changed so much over the past decade or so, and I am using this time to explore my new role in life and my passions.

Why do you want to be involved?

I have realised that I have spent my life avoiding cameras – I have always hated having my photograph taken, even as a child, and have few records of events and achievements. Now, when I am with friends, I value the photographs that enable me to remember and relive the fun that we have. Also – the idea of sharing this experience with a group of women who appreciate the adventures that we can enjoy at any time in our lives really appeals – and I want to share my discovery that it is never too late to build new adventures, fun and friendships into our lives. Now is my time to go for it – life can begin whenever you decide to ramp it up.
