Finding the power of me through an Ironman 70.3

I struggle to find the words that best describe that feeling of crossing the finish line of my first ever 70.3 Iroman. Invincible probably comes close. Followed by ‘oh my God did I really do this?’, pride, strength, confidence, tears, joy and relief. That is how I felt after collapsing in my daughters arms after finishing Weymouth Ironman 70.3 in 2022. I had bloody done it! Through a niggling running injury that had kept me off run training, ignoring my one doubts and other people’s doubts, I had still somehow managed to fulfill my dream. I had tapped into that hidden resilience and power that was inside me and no one could take that away from me. Not the abusive partner. Not the guy at uni who thought it was okay to take advantage of me. The 1.9km swim, the 90km bike ride over undulating terrain and the half marathon at the end was all me. And I felt like superwoman.

Why is the outdoors important to you?

Because running, marathons, triathlons and recently an ironman 70.3s means I am constantly challenging myself, my body and mind, to find out what I am capable of. Doing sports has taught me that I am resilient and strong and has given me a confidence and belief in myself that I never had before. It makes me feel like I really am good enough and it has fuelled my passion to create a space for teenage girls in the form of a running & wellbeing club called Laguna Girls Run Club. I want to instill this belief in my daughters and other young girls – that moving our bodies and achieving things we never believed we could achieve, will help you grow into confident, strong and resilient women.

Why do you want to be involved?

It would feel like an honor to experience this photo shoot which in itself sounds like an adventure, with other strong, inspirational women – creating a bond through the passion of challenging our comfort zones. I want to bring the conversation of teenage girls to the table, and highlight the importance of creating safe spaces so that they too can find joy in movement and being in the outdoors. I want to challenge my own comfort zone (it took a lot of talking to myself to submit this application)
