The Camino with ME

This year I walked the Camino Frances to Santiago – remarkable given that a few years ago I didn’t have the energy to walk to my local shop. Lying in bed with ME (or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), I read book after book about people’s long distance journey adventures, marveled at the healing powers they found within them, and set an intention to embark on my own when I was ready. What I learnt from those books was that adventure is so much more about the journey than the destination, and so for me it was about simply setting one foot in front of the other and being in a process of walking, and only ever to the next cafe! I smiled at my fellow pilgrims, to connect with them and share a part of our journeys together, and took time to appreciate the sights and sounds of the forests and fields. Reflecting on my journey, I realised I’d walked and carried my backpack further than I ever thought was possible for me, and in doing so learnt that I’m stronger and more resilient than I knew.

Why is the outdoors important to you?

Navigating my way through an isolating and lonely experience of illness, I appreciated that in the outdoors you can strip away day to day identities and labels and connect with fellow adventurers through an understanding of what’s in their hearts, and a shared growth experience. Setting the intention gave me purpose, planning my adventure gave me hope, and doing it gave me belief in myself.

Why do you want to be involved?

It looks like a whole lot of FUN and I want to invite more of that back into my life! And if in doing so, I could even inspire even one person, in the way I was inspired by all those people whose tales of adventure I read, then that would mean the world to me.
