Welcome to #PinkNicky’s Blog, for your weekly dose of adventure ideas.
It’s Saturday morning, so grab your tea and toast. This week is all about my top 5 things to watch.
What did I get up to this week: No more wine and cheese for me, I am back into the gym for 2 weights work outs and 3×3 hour cross trainer sessions with my weighted rucksack on. I need to get my legs stronger for my next cold challenge. I have already started to pack my rucksack and its not until the end of March!
I have picked 4 films that capture the essence of female empowerment, resilience, and the pursuit of extraordinary feats. From the depths of free diving to the vastness of camel trekking, from conquering ultra swimming challenges to breaking records.
Each film will inspire, surprise, and perhaps leave you a touch astonished. You can’t help but be captivated, motivated, and just a tad impressed by the incredible narratives that celebrate the indomitable spirit of women. So many times when watching these women, I found myself holding my breath and was just a little be scared for them!
The 5th recommendation is a series that unravels the secrets of longevity from centenarians from across the world. Before you watch the series pick your five “things” that you think would lead to a very long and healthly life.
Enjoy
1 The Deepest Breath (2023)
Summary: The Deepest Breath is a recently released documentary film, that profiles Italian free diver Alessia Zecchini on her quest to break a world record with the help of safety diver Stephen Keenan.
Notes: This film feels more like a thriller. Beautiful ocean footage and an insight into the scary world of free diving. You may need your tissues at the end! I recently saw Alessia talk and you can tell how much she loves being underwater, its the place where she can be herself and immerse herself in the beauty of the sea.

2 NYAD
Summary: Annette Bening and Jodie Foster star in this underdog tale based on the remarkable true story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, who, at the age of 64, became the first person to complete the “Everest of swims,”—a 53-hour, 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida through dangerous open ocean without a shark cage.
Notes: The film has stirred a measure of controversy and it will make your hungry to find out more about Diana Nyad. It shows how far obsession can get you! If you like this you can also watch Free Solo (same directors) Follow Alex Honnold on his quest to perform the first-ever free solo climb of a route on El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park.

3 Tracks (2014)
Summary: This is the story of Robyn Davidson and her 2,000 mile trek across Australia in the mid-1970s with her dog and four camels. Robyn wrote an article for The National Geographic article which was published in 1978 and attracted so much interest that Davidson decided to write a book about the experience. Robyn made the front cover of National Geographic!
This is a totally captivating story from beginning to end!
Notes: This is one of my favourite films and I would love to have Robyn as my dinner guest one day! Her new book has just come out Unfinished Woman: A Memoir Hardcover – December 5, 2023. This is on my reading list I will let you know what think.

4 Hold Your Breath – The Ice Dive
Summary: Follow free diver Johanna Norblad in this documentary as she attempts to break the world record for the distance swum under the ice with one breath. You will also be holding your breath as she swims!! Johanna has been ice diving for over 20 years.
Notes: I loved the relationship with her sister in this film – they make a great partnership. Today they run a film company together.

5 Live to 100 – Secret of the Blue Zone
Summary: Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, there are certain areas of the world — Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Loma Linda, California, where more people live significantly longer than average. The series looks into what is unique to these communites and what we can learn from them. The habits, diets, and lifestyles of blue zone centenarians are simple, but they have the ability to change everything. 12 patterns emerged from the blue zones you will recognise them all – the key is to see how we can intergrate them into our daily lives.
You can also read The Blue Zone Book by Dan Buettner if you want to find out more
Notes: This is so interesting and most of it makes sense, it makes you think why can’t we spread these Blue Zones across the world. My favourite episode was meeting the centenarians in Japan.

@DanBuettner summarises his findings above
Enjoy and let me know if you have any films that I can add to the list for next time
It’s time to get out of bed! and find today’s adventure!
