Going All-In On Life!

I’m currently in Sri Lanka with my middle son who emailed me from Australia before Christmas to say, “I’m coming home for a bit in May, do you want to meet in Asia on the way”. Whilst it was an easy “yes” in most ways (I work in travel, love it, have encouraged my sons to travel, and knew I wouldn’t have seen him for almost a year) unusually I hadn’t travelled since May 2023. On that holiday (Cycle Southern Spain) I had spotted something slightly asymmetrical about the way my boobs moved when I leant over – looking in a big hotel bathroom mirror – and it turned out I had breast cancer. By the time I noticed it it was too big to remove in a lumpectomy, so I was immediately booked in for a mastectomy. The last year of being one boob down, and being on oestrogen suppression drugs when lots of women my age are rubbing oestrogen in, has been quite the adventure! I recently had my first tattoo with a Wonder Woman bangle and cherry blossom to represent strength and beauty, and June will be the first anniversary of my diagnosis – I’m a huge believer in the power of adventures big and small, and your making waves shoot sounds like a great way to celebrate life!

Why is the outdoors important to you?

This year has been crazy. Spending time on an adventure in Sri Lanka with my 19 year old is a way to get back to me after a crazy year. And is time to connect with my gorgeous boy who I haven’t seen for a year, and who I told my diagnosis down a dodgy phone line while he was in a Massachusetts forest.

Why do you want to be involved?

I love women supporting woman the timing feels great for me, and Dungeness is gorgeous – you can see the power station from Folkestone parkrun which I’ve done over 200 times.
